There are so many reasons as to why it may prove smart to take a temporary job, not just for the short term but in the long run too. Here are our top ten reasons:
You are in control
One of the biggest benefits of working on a temporary basis is that you are in control of your career and it’s far easier to take career breaks and fit your job around your life. Although not having a fixed job might be scary at first, it’s easy to become addicted to the freedom of doing temporary work when you want.
Build your CV
If you’re just out University, a temporary job can provide you with hands-on learning and help get your foot in the door with a top employer, it’s a brilliant way to build up your CV and climb up that career ladder
Learn new skills
Expand your knowledge and pick up new skills. Perhaps you’ll discover something you never thought you could actually love doing.
Lets face it spending too much time at home is never good. Temping can help start a routine again and gets you back into the swing of things. It’s a good way to get out of the house and structure your days.
Trial and error
Because the job is temporary, it’s a perfect time to experiment in an area you’ve never worked before while still continuing your permanent job search. It’s a great way to trial things out, if it isn’t for you just give your notice but if it is for you, then brilliant. All you’re doing is keeping as many options and opportunities open for yourself. It’s a win win situation really.
Having a job is better than not having a job
OK, I’m not going to promise that a temp job will be what you want to do long term but at the end of the day a temporary position looks a lot better than having a big old gap on your CV… keep that CV moving and show employers you’ve been keeping busy!
Temporary could turn into permanent
Since I work in the temporary division, I know all too well that if you’re able to demonstrate your exceptional work ethic and make yourself indispensable then perhaps they’ll be motivated to take you on permanently and what a perfect way of going permanent too- If you’ve worked somewhere for a few weeks then you will really start to know the place and the people, much better than you ever could from an interview.
An opportunity to network
You should take the time whilst working in a temporary position to widen your network, some of the people you meet while temping could become very useful contacts that can tell you about opportunities they have months down the line. Make a good impression with the people you meet and they will remember you for other opportunities they have coming up.
Make some cash
And how could we forget – you get paid for every hour. Who doesn’t like extra spending money?
