Telephone Interview Tips

Employers use telephone interviews as a way of identifying and recruiting candidates for employment. Telephone interviews are often used to screen candidates in order to narrow the pool of applicants who will be invited for interview. They are also used as way to minimise the expense involved in interviewing out-of-town candidates.

Be Prepared

Be ready to tell the interviewer about yourself for instance:
  • Name, where you live and educational level.
  • Talk through your work history, what responsibilities have you held.
  • What major challenges have you faced and how did you handle them?
  • Give some examples of team work.
  • Why are you leaving your job?
  • What interests you about this job?
  • What do you know about this Company?
  • What can you contribute to this Company?
  • Why are you the best person for the job?
In addition be prepared for questions about your background and skills.
  • Keep your CV in clear view, on the top of your desk, or tape it to the wall near the telephone, so it is at your fingertips when you need to answer questions.
  • Have a short list of your accomplishments written down
  • Have a pen and paper ready for note taking.
  • Turn call-waiting off so your call is not interrupted.
  • Clear the room - evict the children and the pets, turn off the stereo and the TV, close the door.
Practice

Talking on the telephone is not as easy as it seems, it is helpful to practice. Have a friend or family member conduct a mock interview and tape record it so you can see how you sound over the telephone. Any cassette recorder will work. You'll be able to hear your "ums" and "uhs" and "okays" and you can practice reducing them from your conversational speech. Also rehearse answers to questions you may be asked.

During the Telephone Interview

  • Be Enthusiastic: You are only a CV, a piece of paper to the potential employer. They are likely to have many CV's. Your enthusiasm and energy must stand out.
  • Stand whilst on the phone This allows your voice to project and sound more confident. If you have a mirror to look in, use it. Your facial expressions will reflect through your voice. If you are smiling you will sound interested, if you are frowning you will sound disinterested.
  • Do not smoke, chew gum, eat, or drink: Sound carries down the telephone, this is unprofessional.
  • Do keep a glass of water handy: Just in case you need to wet your mouth.
  • Smile: Smiling will project a positive image to the listener and will change the tone of your voice.
  • Speak slowly and enunciate clearly: Many people get very nervous during telephone interviews and may have a tendency to mumble into the telephone. Relax, speak slowly, do not sound rushed or anxious
  • Use the person's title (Mr. or Ms. and their last name.): Only use a first name if they ask you to, this could be perceived as being over familiar.
  • Do not interrupt: It is very rude to interrupt the interviewer or to give short answers such as Yes and No.
  • Take your time: It is perfectly acceptable to take a moment or two to collect your thoughts.
  • Remember your goal: Your goal is to set-up a face-to-face interview, after you thank the interviewer at the end of the call for allowing you the opportunity of having a telephone interview.
